Raising public awareness of environmental protection

Tran Thanh Liem, Vice-Secretary of provincial Party Committee cum Chairman of provincial People’s Committee yesterday had a meeting with provincial Department of Natural Resources and Environment (DoNRE) and relevant agencies to implement the local task on environmental protection for 2016 and 2020 period. Accordingly, there are a lot of key tasks for the local sector of natural resources and environment amid Binh Duong being going to become a centrally-controlled municipality.

Strengthening propaganda work

At the meeting, leaders of provincial DoNRE said that the province’s environmental protection movement has been promoted across industrial and residential zones. But, in the face of the local fast industrial development and urbanization process, raising public awareness of environmental protection will help environmental management work keep with the local economic-urban development speed.

Nguyen Hong Nguyen, Deputy Director of provincial DoNRE said that the department has also organized exercises against environmental incidents from fire, explosion and toxic chemical spill with a total expense of VND15bln. The program will be widely implemented in districts, towns, TDM city, industrial and residential zones…

To effectively realize environmental protection work, provincial DoNRE will focus on implementing the Project on biological diversity for 2016-2020 period with a total expense of VND10bln. The department will be also responsible for developing models on management of fertilizer, pesticide…, aiming to raise farmers’ awareness in the process of animal husbandry and cultivation. Whilst, provincial Department of Science and Technology will research and put forward equipment for energy audit; assess the potential of cleaner production for some key industries. In addition, the department will build up a system on geographical information to serve the local task on preventing floods, storms and combating climate change.

Provincial Department of Industry and Trade, Department of Transport, Planning Institute…will also map out action programs towards sustainable environmental protection, turning Binh Duong into a centrally-controlled municipality sufficiently meeting criteria on environmental protection as well as enhancing people’s quality of life.

Towards clean industrial and green urban development

Pham Danh, Director of provincial DoNRE said that Binh Duong is a locality with fast industrialization and urbanization speed, so the responsibility for environment protection is actually a burden for the locality. Realizing this, the province has always attached special importance to environmental protection.

In 2016 alone, provincial People’s Committee has granted more than VND1.1trillion to 5 projects on environmental protection. The province is striving to get 100% of new investment projects with arrangement in line with the local planning and waste treatment system. Environmental protection has become a great action program of the province with more than VND12trillion for 2016-2020 period.

Concluding the meeting, Mr.Liem emphasized: “Environmental protection must keep pace with the local industrialization and urbanization speed. Issuing regulations on environmental protection must be line with the local development needs. Districts, towns and TDM city also needs to be flexible in policies to ensure an open climate for investors and well fulfill environmental protection tasks…, turning Binh Duong into a green and clean city in the coming time.

Also at the meeting, Mr.Liem listened to ideas of leaders of provincial DoNRE and some relevant agencies about new environmental protection regulations in the next period. He suggested provincial DoNRE and relevant agencies to set up regulations on environmental protection based on the local features in line with the law. The province must have its own actions on environmental protection in order to guarantee the local sustainable development.
