UN pledges further support to Vietnam’s development

Update: 25-10-2013 | 00:00:00

United Nations agencies will work closely together with Vietnam to realise its millennium development goals (MGDs), said UN Resident Coordinator Pretibha Mehta.

While meeting with Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung in Hanoi on October 24, Mehta spoke highly of Vietnam’s active and responsible engagement in UN activities, noting Vietnam is an exemplary role model in fulfilling many of MDGs ahead of the 2015 schedule.

She also acknowledged Vietnam’s efforts in riding out the global economic recession, maintaining domestic macroeconomic stability, reining in inflation, ensuring social security, and narrowing the development gap between rural and urban areas.

For his part, Dung valued the UN’s global operations in the two key pillars of peace and development, elevating the organisation’s role and position internationally.

He appreciated the UN’s assistance to Vietnam over the years, saying Vietnam is implementing a sustainable development strategy for its people.

Vietnam consistently and effectively carries out its economic development policy closely linked to social progress and equality, ensuring better human rights, the PM said.

He proposed more UN assistance to optimize the efficiency of MDGs in Vietnam.

He conveyed best wishes to Mehta on United Nations Day (October 24).
