Boosting Vietnam-US relationship

Update: 09-10-2011 | 00:00:00

Vietnamese ambassador to the US, Nguyen Quoc Cuong, highlighted the fruitful relationship between the two countries while meeting with leaders in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania on October 7.

During his three-day working trip to Pennsylvania, Ambassador Cuong also held working sessions with Pittsburg's leaders and met with the staff and Vietnamese and international students at Pittsburg and Chatham universities.

He also delivered a speech at the World Affairs Councils of America (WACA).

At these meetings, the Vietnamese diplomat highlighted prospects for Vietnam-US relations, particularly in economics and education, aiming to raise bilateral ties to a higher level.

Leaders of Pennsylvania, the two universities, and representatives of US businesses spoke highly of Vietnam and its people, as well as its recent socioeconomic achievements.

US businesses indicated interest in investing in Vietnam – one of the five emerging markets prioritised by President Barack Obama’s administration to double US exports in 2015.

A business delegation from Pennsylvania plans to visit Vietnam next year to study the Vietnamese market and seek investment opportunities.

Pennsylvania, located in the northeastern US, has a population of about 13 million. In 2008, the state’s export turnover with Vietnam reached US$118 million, up nearly 260 percent compared to the previous year. Since 2008, Pittsburg and Da Nang in Vietnam have become "twin cities."
