Da Nang welcomes first test-tube babies

The first IVF baby was born in Da Nang City

During the seminar, Tran Dinh Vinh, Director of the Da Nang Obstetrics and Paediatrics Hospital, noted the births reflected great efforts by the city’s experts and doctors in the treatment for infertile couples.

Updated treatment methods together with advanced reproductive technology learnt will allow the hospital’s doctors to provide quality services to patients with infertility problems in the Central and Central Highlands regions.

Scientific reports on new approaches to in vitro fertilization (IVF) were delivered to the participants by leading experts from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, which are leading in the treatment service.

According to Ho Manh Tuong, Director of the Research Centre for Genetics and Reproductive Health (CGRH), School of Medicine, Vietnam National University in Ho Chi Minh City, around 1 million couples nationwide are struggling to conceive.

About 15,000 infertile couples have sought IVF treatment annually, Tuong said.

The Da Nang Obstetrics and Paediatrics Hospital has started IVF treatment since March this year.

Vietnam’s first IVF babies were born in April, 1998 in Tu Du Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City.
