Happy Feet race to make children happier

Update: 11-10-2012 | 00:00:00

The Slipper Race to be organized in Ho Chi Minh City in the next two weeks has more sense than just a sportive race at its true meaning – it races for making contributions to help underprivileged children.

To take part in the race, which kicks off on October 21 at Anh Sao Bridge Park in District 7’s Phu My Hung, participants are encouraged to wear slippers to join the race to experience the hardship and life of underprivileged children and realize how their contributions mean to them.

All proceeds from contributions and donations to help children following the event will be sent to the three charity organizations – the Know One Teach One (KOTO), the Vietnam Association of Protection Children’s Rights (VNAPCR), and the Loreto Vietnam – Australia Program (LVAP).

The race is expected to draw the participation of 1,500 people and raise a fund of US$10,000.

The race is in fact an edition of the Project Happy Feet (PHF) Limited, a Singapore-based non-profit organization set up since 2009 with its vision to support education-related initiatives to help underprivileged children in developing nation.

Last year, the PHF has funded around US$244,000 through its events to offer aid to over 4,000 people in Singapore, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Nepal.

Lam Viet Hung, director of KOTO fundraising unit, said, “For the younger participants, we hope they walk away with an appreciation for what they have been given, and feel inspired and empowered to do something for their counterparts who are less privileged.”

“We hope people will put themselves in slippers of these underprivileged children and do their part to contribute towards them having a chance at education,” he added.
