Sweetened ginger village in Binh Nham

  Binh Nham commune-based people produce candied ginger for Tet holiday.

Traditional job

People in Binh Hoa hamlet said that the career of making candied ginger has appeared for a long time. This job takes much time and labor.

Nguyen Thi Lan said “I’ve involved in making candied ginger for 20 years. To make white and attractive candied ginger roots, it requires a long process. Earlier, the village people produced only 50-100kg of candied ginger root but now thanks to machines, every family produces several hundreds kilograms to cater for customers”.

“Soft, delicious and attractive candied ginger slices require secrets and experiences”, Lan added.

Pham Phu Nam, vice chairman of Binh Nham commune People’s Committee, said “On normal days, local people earn a living on other jobs but on the days near Tet they focus on making candied ginger root. Many customers choose to buy sweetened ginger made by the village people, owing to its safety and hygiene. Despite diversity of confectionary products, the number of candied ginger made by the village people still increases sharply…”.

Maintaining the traditional job

On these days, visiting Binh Hoa hamlet, visitors will witness busy ambience of candied ginger makers. At Binh Nham candied ginger village, there are more than ten households living on this job.

Nam added “Local party committee and authority has paid much attention to the traditional work of local households by assistances of capital. In the coming time, the communal People’s Committee will cooperate with Thuan An town division of Culture, Tourism and Sport to turn the village into eco-tourism site in a bid to promote the village tradition”.

Local households said that this year’s candied ginger is priced at VND75,000-80,000/kg. The traditional work has contributed to bring a warm Tet for local residents.
