The event has largely contributed to energy saving and carbon dioxide reduction campaigns which help to reduce green house effects and climate changes. The campaign started in 2007 in Sydney, Australia has widely spread to thousands of cities and millions of people around the world.

Viet Nam joins Earth Hour in 2009 with the first light out in March 28. Viet Nam saved about 140,000kWh in 2009 and 500,000kWh (equivalent to VND 450 million) in 2010.

In 2010, the event has attracted over 1 billion people in over 4,000 cities across 88 nations in the world. Under official document No. 517/UBND-KTN dated March 10th, Binh Duong authority has committed to attend the event lasting one hour at 20:30 by coordinated actions of Binh Duong EVN, Department of Environment and Natural Resources and Department of Industry and Trade. Up to date, 29 provinces of Viet Nam have registered for Earth Hour.
