Fine arts and handicraft export: low revenue but sustainability

Update: 08-09-2010 | 00:00:00

As one of the local staple export items, fine arts and handicraft industry’s advantage is more highlighted than other industries. Aside from material sources on the spot and high value, the fine arts and handicraft export has contributed to spread the national tradition to the world.

Binh Duong is one of the country’s strongest localities of fine arts and handicraft industry with many ceramics, lacquer, bamboo article workshops. Of these, there are many famous trademarks such as Minh Long I, Cuong Phat, Dai Hong Phat porcelain products, Dong Tam, Hung Vuong lacquer products, Ba Nhat bamboo articles…

Ceramics accounts for the highest value of fine arts and handicraft items’ export revenue.

However, the industry’s export has so far focused on over 20 FDI companies and 80 local ones with the total export revenue of over US$140mil. In the first 7 months of this year, the industry’s export in the province reached encouraging results with the total export revenue of about US$88mil. The local companies’ export market has reached over 50 nations and territories, mainly in the EU, US, Japan…

The fine arts and handicraft industry’s export revenue is lower than other industries of timber, apparel, footwear… but it has a sustainability, owing to material source on the  spot. Besides, the industry has an advantage of spreading the national tradition to the world. Dai Hong Phat Ltd. director Nguyen Thi Hong Van said that “the local fine arts and handicraft products show unique cultural patterns on every product. Therefore, the products are also art works”.

Though the industry has many advantages, its export faces many challenges, especially competition with products of other Asian nations. Cuong Phat Ltd. director Ly Ngoc Bach said “to improve competition for the industry, businesses should invest in design and research to grasp customers’ demand for the sake of export market expansion”.

According to the local department of Trade and Industry, among local staple export items, advantage of fine arts and handicraft industry is very great, thanks to domestic material source and unique cultural patterns.

To create sustainability for the industry, businesses should focus on capacity, knowledge, technique, market and map out proper strategies in conformity with business and production of every unit.
