UN praises Vietnam’s success in implementing MDGs

Update: 23-09-2011 | 00:00:00

UNDP Head Helen Clark has highly appreciated Vietnam for successfully implementing Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and actively joining the “ One UN” initiative.

Ms Clark was speaking at a high-level meeting on commitments to accelerating the implementation of MDGs held on September 21 in New York on the sidelines of the 66th session of the UN General Assembly.

In his speech, Deputy Head of the Vietnamese Representative Mission to the UN Bui The Giang said during the process of carrying out MDGs adopted by the UN in 2000, Vietnam has gained the remarkable achievements in maintaining relatively high economic growth and implementing socio-economic policies.

The UN and the international community have recognized Vietnam as one of the countries in the Asia Pacific region to implement MDGs successfully.

Vietnam has so far achieved five out of eight MDGs ahead of time and is trying its best to fulfill the remaining goals by 2015.

However, Vietnam is still confronted with a lot of challenges and difficulties such as overcoming the consequences of the global financial and economic crisis and coping with climate change and trade protectionism especially against key export products.

To fight off such challenges, Vietnam needs to integrate MDGs into its plans, strategies and policies for socio-economic development in all fields and the country also needs more assistance and support from the UN, international organizations and donors in order to implement MDGs successfully. Vietnam totally supports the UN’s top priority given to implementing MDGs, Mr Giang said.
