Previously as the Delta strain penetrated the locality, the number of patients spiked to cause the province's health system to face many difficulties in COVID-19 epidemic control and medical examination and treatment for the people. From the experience of anti-epidemic in the past time and before the new variant of Omicron, the provincial health system is keeping on to make efforts to protect people's health.

Associate Professor, Doctor, Medicine Doctor Nguyen Lan Hieu, Director of Hanoi Medical University Hospital, said: “Omicron can be a variant that ends the COVID-19 catastrophe. It is often that before disappearing, the last waves can impact devastating consequences. Omicron does not cause aggravation of the disease, but many epidemiological studies show that with its terrifying rate of spreading, Omicron might overload any health system if there is no scientific organization. Even in the UK, Omicron has infected a large number of medical staff, causing a serious shortage of manpower. Hospitals are always in a state of alarm not only because of the aggravation of Covid-19 cases but also of other diseases when there are no doctors and nurses available due to quarantine."

To be ready to respond to the Omicron, the province has increased the hospital bed capacity and established new treatment areas in the direction that each hospital and district medical center would have a treatment area for mild to moderate COVID-19 patients. In addition, Department of Health has directed private hospitals to set up COVID-19 patient treatment areas to share and reduce the burden on State healthcare.

Sector II Medicine Doctor Nguyen Van Tinh, Deputy Director of the provincial General Hospital, said that the hospital has changed its model of receiving and treating COVID-19 patients. In particular, the hospital organizes the treatment of COVID-19 patients in all departments and not only internists but also surgeons and obstetricians will have to participate in the treatment of COVID-19 patients. All departments in the hospital must prepare quarantine rooms to treat the group's diseases. In addition, the hospital also increased the number of beds for resuscitation, especially for the elderly with underlying medical conditions along with inspirators, dialysis machines, kidney dialysis, ECMO etc.

Meanwhile, talking to reporters, Sector Medicine Doctor Do Viet Hung, deputy director of Thuan An city Medical Center, said that Omicron is a strain of a fast spread rate, but because of his experience in COVID-19 treatment, the locality will not be passive if such variant appears. In the immediate future, the center will increase the hospital bed capacity along with the ready staff when the number of patients might increase. The center also promotes screening and taking history of patients with COVID-19, who come for daily examination and treatment to promptly detect people with new variants.

4 focal measures implemented

Dr. Nguyen Hong Chuong, Director of lcoal Department of Health, said that in response to the new strain of Omicron, Binh Duong has focused on four key solutions including: remote prevention, early detection for quarantine, vaccination and strengthen the treatment system for timely treatment. In remote prevention activities, the province mobilizes the participation of departments and organizations in controlling people coming and going from international border gates, airways, seaports etc.

Binh Duong is currently reviewing cases of entry from November 28, 2021 with positive SARS-CoV-2 test results by NAAT (Nucleic Acid AmplificationTest) method or PCR method within 14 days from the date of entry. These cases will be sampled and sent to the Pasteur Institute in Ho Chi Minh city for epidemiological assessment and gene sequencing to identify the possible Omicron variant. In case a person is positive to the Omicron variant, the health sector continues to review and take samples of close contacts and sequence the genes. Along with taking samples for testing, the department has also strengthened the surveillance system to detect outbreaks and clusters of cases with unusual developments and characteristics.

Along with prevention and early detection, Binh Duong has aslo accelerated vaccination against COVID-19 for people, especially organizing the 3rd dose injection for highly-risk subjects such as pregnant women, the elderly, people with disabilities and background diseases, people who have been vaccinated for a long time, and children in the prescribed age. As of January 2, the province has injected 4,433,451 doses of COVID-19 vaccines out of a total of 5,401,230 doses allocated by the Ministry of Health; in which 2,470,991 people got 1st injection, 1, 1,866,374 people got 2nd injection and 96,086 people 3rd injection. By the spirit of getting to every corner, localities have increased the speed of coverage. vaccines for people and organized fixed injection points and mobile injection points in the community, at factories and enterprises to give injections to workers.
