Intellectuals are the nation's “pure gold”

Update: 14-08-2011 | 00:00:00

Intellectuals are the “pure gold” of the nation, said Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong during his visit to the Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations (VUSTA) on August 13.

At the working session, VUSTA reviewed its implementation of the Party Central Committee’s Resolution No 27 on developing a contingent of intellectuals to further the national process of industrialisation and modernisation.

Resolution 27 is an important document, affirming the Party leaders’ attention to Vietnamese intellectuals, especially those involved in the scientific and technological sectors. Accordingly, many incentives and preferential policies have been adopted to improve the quality of intellectual activities.

Scientists pointed out the limitations they faced in implementing the resolution, namely the lack of appropriate mechanisms and financial resources to carry out national projects and programmes.

They asked the Party and State to pay more attention to training human resources and to introduce more incentives and policies to increase the efficiency of scientists.

Dinh The Huynh, head of the Party Central Committee’s Information and Education Commission, along with Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan and leaders from relevant agencies gave their opinions and responded to questions related to implementing Resolution 27 effectively.

In conclusion, Party leader Trong praised VUSTA’s significant contributions to national development while urging it to work more closely with Party and State agencies to enhance the role of scientific and technological intellectuals in making policies and managing major projects.

He also agreed to consider recognizing VUSTA as a socio-political organisation and called on intellectuals to make more contributions to the process of national industrialisation and modernisation.
