Make a living by growing bamboo

Update: 26-07-2011 | 00:00:00

Mrs. Luong Thi Lot in a risk-taking move has chosen to plant Taiwan giant bamboo (Dendrocalamuls latiflorus) which profits her VND 80-90 million a year.

“It is beyond  my expectation. The bamboo yields good sprouts which is delicious and pricy. You can earn all year rounds after 12 months of initial planting. Averagely, a kilogram of bamboo sprouts is priced VND15,000-16,000 which is reduced to VND3,000-4,000 at the end of the season,” said Mrs. Luong Thi Lot in Phu My Ward, Thu Dau Mot Town.

In her 3,000-square-meter garden, she grows 3-4 bamboos in each bush. When the bamboo reaches 4 meters high, she chops down the top and removes all branches from 2 meters high downward to retain the sprouts. She applies organic fertilizers and urea with dropping watering to ensure humidity. By October or November, she re-arranges her garden by chopping down old bamboos and leaving the younger ones to grow.

Dendrocalamuls latiflorus is sweet, crust and easy to be cooked.
