Old man keen on teaching Hue royal music to young people

Update: 04-03-2011 | 00:00:00

Le Huu Thi is one of the last men in the Hoa Thanh music troupe in Bao Dai king dynasty and also the eldest artisan of Hue royal music.

Now, he is living at 200 Dang Tat Street, Huong Vinh commune, in the ancient city of Hue. Although he is 100 years old, he is still keen on teaching Hue royal music to young people.

He said the Hoa Thanh music troupe in the palace only served kings on major occasions such as enthronement and longevity congratulations for King Bao Dai’s mother.

Since Hue royal music was recognized as an intangible and oral masterpiece of humanity by UNESCO, Mr. Thi has often been invited to teach different people and act as a consultant for the Hue royal music troupe under the Centre for the Preservation of Relics in Hue ancient city.

Now, despite of his old age, he still goes to a theatre in the Centre for the Preservation of Relics in Hue ancient city to teach the music to artists and musicians. He said after 80 years of playing Hue royal music, the thing that satisfied him most was to teach the music to younger generations. He still remembers and performs 20 pieces of the royal music.
