More efforts needed to uphold the role of intellectuals: Party leader

Update: 16-08-2011 | 00:00:00

Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong on August 15 worked with the Party Central Committee’s Commission for Information and Education on the implementation of Resolution No 27 to develop a contingent of intellectuals to further the process of national industrialisation and modernisation.

According to a report presented by the Commission, the resolution has received response from related ministries, agencies, and localities that introduced policies and mechanisms to uphold the role of Vietnamese intellectuals.

However, it declared the implementation of the resolution remains unsatisfactory.

Dinh The Huynh, Head of the Information and Education Commission, said Resolution 27 is very significant and affects a number of fields and attributed its slow implementation to many factors.

General Secretary Trong emphasized the Resolution's importance, saying it shows the Party’s attention to Vietnamese intellectuals in the context of global integration and scientific and technological development.

The Party leader highlighted the efforts made by ministries, agencies and localities in implementing the Resolution, and praised the positive changes created through introducing specific policies.

However, he said, there are still shortcomings, one of which is related agencies and localities’ lack of awareness.

To ensure the Resolution's effectiveness, the Party leader urged agencies and localities to boost communication in order to raise the awareness of cadres at the grassroots level about the role of Vietnamese intellectuals.

Related agencies and localities should create an action plan to promote the role of intellectuals, he said, adding that developing a contingent of intellectuals is the responsibility of the entire political system and society.
