Update: 09-12-2011 | 00:00:00

Vietnam attaches great importance to the development of cooperative relations with European Union countries, including the UK.

National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung made the statement at a meeting with UK Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg in London on December 8.

The Vietnamese legislative leader said his delegation’s visit is an opportunity for the two sides to discuss ways to promote bilateral cooperation in trade, investment and international issues of mutual interest.

Chairman Hung thanked the UK Government, Parliament and people for their official development assistance (ODA) provision to help Vietnam implement socio-economic development projects.

He said he hopes the UK Government and Parliament will continue to support Vietnam in boosting cooperation with the EU.

Deputy PM Clegg spoke highly of NA Chairman Hung’s first official visit in his capacity as Chairman of the Vietnamese National Assembly.

He expressed his belief that on the basis of the Joint Declaration on Vietnam-UK Strategic Partnership, opportunities for bilateral cooperation will be further promoted, allowing each country to better tap their potential.

The UK Government will continue its provision of ODA to Vietnam, affirmed Clegg.

The same day, NA Chairman Hung met with Deputy Speaker of the UK House of Commons Lindsay Hoyle who expressed his belief that Mr Hung’s visit will make practical contributions to strengthening friendship and cooperation between the two countries and parliaments and offer new prospects for bilateral, inter-regional and international cooperation.

The UK Government and Parliament want to foster ties with Vietnam and support stronger bilateral cooperation in economics, trade, investment, culture, education and coping with climate change, for mutual benefits, said the Deputy Speaker.

Mr Hung echoed the Deputy Speaker, saying that the two countries should continue to expand their cooperation in science and technology, culture, health care and other fields of mutual interest.

The same day, NA Chairman Hung witnessed the signing of a cooperative agreement between Vietnam National University of Hanoi, and the University of Nottingham.
