At the meetings, Vietnam will continue its efforts to promote solidarity and cooperation within the ASEAN bloc, strengthen relations between ASEAN and its partners, enhance ASEAN’s role as a leader, and raise Vietnam’s status in the region.

Earlier, the ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting (ASEAN SOM) and the Committee for the Southeast Asian Nuclear-Weapons-Free Zone Treaty (SEANWFZ) discussed and agreed on the contents and preparations for the 44th ASEAN Ministers’ Meeting (AMM 44), the 18th ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF 18) and other related meetings, as well as solutions for the signing of the SEANWFZ.

Senior ASEAN officials also discussed a series of important issues related to the ongoing East Sea issue, the progress in building the three pillars of the ASEAN Community, ASEAN connectivity and the implementation of the ASEAN Charter, and the implementation of establishing the ASEAN Institute for Peace and Reconciliation.

They reviewed developments in the relationships between ASEAN and its partners, the ASEAN leaders’ draft Statement on the ASEAN Community in the Global Community of Nations, the comprehensive partnership between ASEAN and the European Union, and the contents of the sixth East Asia Summit (EAS 6).

After exchanging views on the East Sea and the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC), ASEAN officials agreed with the DOC’s content and affirmed they would discuss the document’s importance for peace and stability on the East Sea with China.
