Vietnam, Myanmar boost multifaceted cooperation

Update: 22-12-2011 | 00:00:00

The consensus was reached during their talks in Myanmar’s capital city of Nay Pyi Daw on December 21.

President Thein Sein welcomed Mr Dung’s visit to Myanmar, saying it will contribute to reinforcing bilateral Myanmar-Vietnam relations as well as cooperation in economics, investment, tourism, and health care among countries in the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS).

Myanmar will create favourable conditions for Vietnamese businesses to invest in the country’s agriculture, infrastructure development, mining, and hotel sectors, he said.

PM Dung congratulated Myanmar on its achievements in national reconciliation and concord, development and international integration.

He also expressed his belief that the visit is a good chance for both sides to review the results of the cooperation, as well as to discuss ways to strengthen ties.

PM Dung and President Thein Sein agreed to give priority to boosting cooperation in 12 key areas, as mentioned in the Vietnam-Myanmar joint statement in 2010, and increase two-way trade to US$500 million by 2015.

They agreed to ask relevant ministries to work closely together in order to increase cooperation in the fields of great potential such as agriculture and aquaculture development, aviation, tourism, telecommunications, diplomacy, security, and national defence.

During the talks, both leaders also discussed international and regional issues of mutual concern and affirmed close cooperation in ASEAN as well as other organizations such as Cambodia-Laos-Myanmar-Vietnam (CLMV), the Ayeyawady - Chao Phraya - Mekong Economic Cooperation Strategy (ACMECS), the GMS, and the East-West Economic Corridor (EWEC). They reaffirmed their active contributions to building a strong and united ASEAN Community by 2015.

Both sides committed their close coordination with relevant countries in the sustainable use of the water resources of the Mekong River, and said they back the full implementation of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea and the building of a Code of Conduct (COC) in the East Sea for the sake of peace, stability, and marine safety in the region.

PM Dung took the opportunity to convey Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong’s invitation to visit Vietnam to President Thein Sein. The Myanmar President accepted it with pleasure and invited General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and State President Truong Tan Sang to visit the country.

After the talks, the two leaders witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation between the two agricultural ministries and one on a technical assistance project worth US$250,000 to the Myanmar Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation.

Later the same day, PM Dung and his entourage left Nay Pyi Daw, successfully concluding his visit to the country, where he attended the GMS Summit.
